About

Rich Kornutik, founder of RFK Development, LLC, designed his own tree houses as a child, swept sheetrock dust as a teenager growing up in Wilton, CT, then began framing homes for a local builder as a college student. After graduating from college with a degree in business management, Rich was named site-supervisor for a Milford-based renovation firm, where he quickly learned how to manage supplies and inventory and how to judge quality workmanship among tradesmen, whether it be plumbers, electricians or masons. Rich spent a number of years in commercial & international sales positions in NYC before deciding to pursue his true passion of custom home building. He focused on building high-quality spec and custom homes in the town of Westport, CT with his wife Susan assisting in the day-to-day operations. He managed sub-contractors (he employs many of the same ones today), interfaced with homeowners and kept projects flowing smoothly, on track and on budget.

When he founded his own company in 1996, Rich began integrating form and function with aesthetic details such as hardwood floors with walnut inlays, intricate archways and unrivaled outdoor spaces. Since building his first home—a 5-bedroom, 4 ½-bath house in Westport—Rich has returned numerous times at the homeowners’ request, adding a home gym and sauna; a lower-level children’s family room with chalkboard paint walls; and an upgraded front foyer. Such repeat calls are common—and a testimony to his trustworthiness and reputation as a builder.

RFK Development's projects throughout Fairfield and Westport encompass everything from homes with architectural peaks and a pleasing exterior mix of wood, copper, and stonework, to the whole-house renovation of a dated split-level ranch. He has also transferred his skills to the commercial side, completing a small business complex, as well as the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home at the Brick Walk in downtown Fairfield.

Rich has served on the Fairfield Rotary Club, coached numerous children’s sports teams and installed a playground in his own neighborhood as a member of the town’s SPARK (Safe Parks And Recreation for Kids) Committee. Former First Selectman Ken Flatto appointed him to an advisory role on the Fairfield Woods Middle School building committee.

Rich has lived in Fairfield for 30 years with his wife Susan Ryan Kornutik, a Fairfield native. They have 3 children, Stephen is a 2019 graduate of Catholic University, Jack is a 2021 graduate of Fairfield University and Katie is a senior at Fordham University.
